Two veteran coaches are stepping down after the season. Gene Caslin, who won four district titles in 14 seasons at Mifflin, is retiring. Brian McCants, who guided Wellington to the state tournament in 2003, is leaving the school after 12 seasons to pursue other career options.
"I get that reality because I don't bite my tongue with them. Some buy it. If they don’t come back, it ain't for them," he said. "I tell the parents beforehand that this is not for everybody, but you parents need to see where your kids' head is at. It's a good measuring stick because if it's not for him, Coach McCants is still going to love you if you don’t play basketball."
Coach McCants and Sons Marcus & Sean helped Wellington to their first State Final IV.
On Jan. 4 in a 66-49 victory over Zanesville Rosecrans, Patrick became the second player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points. Sean McCants averaged 28.6 points as a senior in 2006 and finished with more than 1,600 points.

“All of our incoming student-athletes will be looked upon in one way or another to contribute immediately,” Porter said. “Specifically, Justin Tyson was brought in to give us a greater low-post presence. Anthony Gage and Charlton Conner will help supply some leadership and court vision.
“Meanwhile, Jared Dewberry, Sean McCants and Clint Nicholson should allow us some added scoring presence on the floor.”

McCants is taking a page out of his father Brian McCants’s book and is giving back and teaching the game of basketball. Brian McCants was a very successful player in his era, and has enjoyed success coaching and training in the state of Ohio for many years.
Ed looks to have the same impact on the game in the same light as his father. Now that Ed is no longer playing he is making his impact felt in many ways.
Marcus McCants led Columbus Wellington the their first ever state final 4. McCants accepted full ride offers to Wisconsin Milwaukee, Olney Junior College where he was a top 10 National PG collegiate prospect who eventually signed with South Carolina State of the MEAC.
Marcus Holds Marion County Records for most points scored as a Freshman, Most points scored in a season for a Sophomore and was 2X All State 1st team & 1 time 2nd Team All State.
McCant's team is filled with other "Banner Boys" from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Their first game is Saturday afternoon in Peoria, Illinois. If they win their first game, they will likely face the team of Ohio State alumni in the second round.

McCants scored 21 points for the Panthers in the first-round upset against Alabama in 2005, followed by another 18 against Boston College to lead the Panthers into the Sweet 16 before he scored 13 in the loss to Illinois.
MILWAUKEE - Ed McCants of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will be one of the participants in the 17th Annual Mountain Dew College Slam Dunk Contest in Saint Louis.
The contest will be held Thursday night in conjunction with the Final Four. The event, along with a three-point shooting contest, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Washington University Fieldhouse.
McCants was the Horizon League Player of the Year this season while leading UWM into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. He ranked third in the league in scoring while standing first in three-point field goals made, 11th in steals and eighth in three-point field goal percentage. He also ranked in the top 15 nationally in three-point field goals made.

Panthers senior guard Ed McCants was in his hotel room with his roommate, senior forward James Wright. On TV, Indiana Pacers guard Reggie Miller was putting up 39 points against the Los Angeles Lakers. As the two watched Miller come off screens and get open time and again, McCants told Wright, "Reggie is going to leave the game of basketball [at the end of this season], and I'm going to pick up where he left off."
